Why Comedy on Mackay is One of Montreal's Best Comedy Nights
On atmosphere, curation, and building a room people want to return to
Montreal has no shortage of comedy shows. Between clubs, indie rooms, open mics, and late-night chaos, you can watch stand-up almost every night of the week. So what actually makes a comedy room stand out?
For us, Comedy on Mackay was never just about putting comedians on a stage. It was about building a room people actually wanted to return to.
When I started Comedy on Mackay in November 2024 at N sur Mackay, the goal was simple: create a space where comedians could grow and audiences could feel welcomed into the show instead of intimidated by it. Over time, that turned into a weekly comedy room that now hosts local comics, touring acts, themed nights, experimental shows, and comedians visiting from places like Berlin, Paris, Toronto, and New York.
One of the biggest things people notice about Comedy on Mackay is the atmosphere. The room feels intimate without feeling awkward. Because the space is smaller, audiences become part of the energy of the show instead of feeling disconnected from it. You actually feel the laughter move across the room.
The lineups are also curated intentionally. Instead of randomly stacking comedians together, we build the show around pacing, energy, and variety. There’s usually a strong opener, a strong middle, and a closer that can finish the room properly. Between those anchors, we mix experienced comedians, rising comics, visiting acts, and different comedic styles so the show feels dynamic instead of repetitive.
Another thing that makes the room different is the community around it. Comedy on Mackay runs because of comedians, volunteers, photographers, editors, hosts, barkers, audience members, and people who genuinely care about building live comedy in Montreal. A lot of indie comedy survives because people continue showing up for each other.
We also try to make the room accessible. Student discounts, themed shows, affordable tickets, free 4K footage for comics, and a welcoming atmosphere all matter to us because we want comedy to feel open to people, not exclusive.
And honestly, part of what makes Montreal comedy special is Montreal itself.
This city is weird in the best way possible. It’s bilingual, artistic, chaotic, political, musical, and full of people from completely different backgrounds trying to coexist through construction and emotional damage. That energy naturally makes its way into the comedy scene.
At Comedy on Mackay, you’ll see everything from absurdist comedy to immigrant stories, queer comedy, musical comedy, relationship disasters, multilingual crowd work, and jokes about STM trauma all in the same night.
That unpredictability is part of what makes live comedy exciting.
Because at the end of the day, a great comedy room is not just about getting laughs.
It’s about building a place people want to come back to.
