A Beginner’s Guide to Montreal Comedy

First time in Montreal?

First time in Montreal and looking for something to do? Montreal has a long history in comedy, offering a variety of shows in both English and French. If you’ve never been to a stand-up comedy show, this is a great guide for you!

Comedy can feel tricky if you’re new to the scene. Some shows may not be your style, and occasionally a performer’s material can feel polarizing or off-putting. It’s normal to feel apprehensive, which is why this guide can help you find the kind of comedy room that feels right for you.

What are you looking for?

If you’re looking for an opportunity to hang out with your friends and laugh, a comedy show is a good start. If you’re looking for a quiet activity, I’d suggest watching a movie or taking a nap.

What are you interested in?

If you’re considering the comedy route, it depends on what you’re interested in. Are you into dark humor? Are you into dad jokes? Are you interested in diverse voices? These are important things to know! If you’re into seeing international headliners, head over to The Comedy Nest. They have comedy shows from Thursday to Sunday, combining Montreal local talent with national and international guests who have appeared on late-night television, like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, or Jimmy Kimmel, to name a few.

If you’re wanting to really dive into the local Montreal scene, Comedy on Mackay is a great place. Each lineup is curated, featuring professional and up-and-coming comedians from the Montreal comedy scene. Femme-produced at N sur Mackay, a woman-owned and woman-managed bar, the show highlights a diverse range of voices so there is something for everyone.

If you’re looking for something more party-like, I’d recommend The Kickback! It’s hosted by Eva Alexos and combines stand-up comedy with a party held at different locations in Montreal. If you’re into partying and comedy, this is definitely the spot you’d want to hit up in Montreal.

If you’re into good food, drinks, and comedy, I would recommend heading over to “Burgundy Lion Comedy Nights” on Wednesdays at 8pm, where you’ll encounter a stand-up comedy show in English that is followed by an open mic (The Lion’s Den) where professional and amateur comedians try out new material organized by MTLOL.ca.

If you’re looking for queer comedy and LGBTQ+ lineups, check out the Montreal Indie Comedy Collective, which curates the best queer lineups in the city. They hold shows at different locations in Montreal, so be sure to follow them on Instagram. Not downtown exactly?

You can always try the West Island, where the Comedy Cave MTL holds their shows in English featuring local Montreal comedians. They also hold shows outside of Montreal.

What should I expect at my first comedy show?

Most local comedy shows are casual. You can usually come with friends, grab a drink, sit back, and enjoy the show. You don’t have to participate unless the comedian talks to you, and even then, most crowd work is playful.

Do I have enough money to go to a show? Typically, local shows range from as little as $5 to 25. There are also shows that are PWYC. The local comedy scene in Montreal often uses the money to pay the comedians and cover expenses related to producing the show, helping local comedy thrive.

There are many different kinds of comedy shows in Montreal, and this list is just a starting point. Whether you’re looking for headliners, local talent, queer comedy, food and drinks, or a full party atmosphere, there’s probably a room for you.
